John Locke was crucial for Journalists and philosophy. He had many important ideas such as the social contract which is the way people agreed to be ruled by governments. Locke fled to Europe which is where he wrote most of his books.

In 1729, when Ireland was in very big financial trouble, satirist, Jonathon Swift decided to publish 'A Modest Proposal'. This was a satirical piece of writing which suggested eating your children, or selling them to the rich as a food.

HCJ Seminar Paper - Mary Wollstonecraft (Semester 2)

Mary Wollstonecraft published ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Women’ towards the end of the 18th Century. She seemed to feel that women were forcibly placed into a restricted role in society. Mary’s views have lead to her being considered one of the first feminists.

Kant and Hegel

In HCJ, the focus over the last week has been on two German philosophers - Kant and Hegel. These are two particularly difficult philosophers to get your head around, but i hope i've done ok in understanding some of thier concepts and ideas.

The Communist Manifesto was written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in 1848.
The short book followed marxist politcal theories, and explores why they feel we should live in a communist society, listing certain demands and explaining how we would gradually progress to communism.

This is certainly an interesting piece of journalism from Cobbett. It essentially follows his journey across the south of England, and you read about his consistant complainig. These complaints range from the treatment of farmers and the countryside, to the trees that fill England.

J'Accuse by Emile Zola

J'Accuse was an open letter written by journalist Emile Zola, and was addressed to the President of France - Felix Faure. It was published on the front of a daily paris newspaper called L'Aurore on January 13th 1898.
